At the head of the Premiers Grands Vins Classés. The creation of the current vineyard goes back to the years 1630 to 1650. The Château, itself, was created in 1709 by Romain de Filhot, councilor in the Bordeaux parliament, whose family already owned the noble house of Verdoulet in Sauternes. At the time, it imposed the use of the Sauternes appellation instead of the former name "Vin de Langon" for the sweet wines of this region. After the revolution, the Lur-Saluces, heirs Filhot by Joséphine de Filhot, manage the estate. In 1840, Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces (1810-1876) joined the domains of Château Filhot and Pineau du Rey. In 1845, he rebuilt the castle in a neoclassical style according to the plans of the architect Poitevin and surrounds it with a superb English park of the famous gardener-landscape Louis-Ferdinand Fischer. The Château was noted second growth in the classification proposed in 1855 to Napoleon III by the brokers and the Chamber of Commerce of Bordeaux.
Classified under its name in 1855, the Château was then distributed worldwide, until the end of the 19th century, under the name Château Sauternes. The estate was renamed Château Filhot in 1901. In 1935, the Countess Durieu de Lacarelle, née Lur-Saluces, bought the vineyard from her brother. His son, Louis Durieu de Lacarelle rebuilt and developed the vineyard until the 1970s. One of the daughters of Countess Durieu de Lacarelle born Lur-Saluces married Count Pierre de Vaucelles, ambassador of France. Their eldest son, Count Henri de Vaucelles, ran the estate in 1974. His son Gabriel, who has been managing since 1996, is now in charge. The 62 ha of vines are planted with 60% Sémillon, 36% Sauvignon and 4% Muscadelle. The hills are oriented south or southwest and are made of gravel, clay and sand on limestone plateau. Bordered by the forest of the Landes and crossed by a small local river, the Ciron, the estate benefits from micro-climatic conditions ideal for the development of Botrytis Cinerea.
For Gabriel de Vaucelles, in 2017, the frost has reached only a lower part of the hill, which has not really been very important. The wines will be lighter with a lot of freshness, but the "Filhot" quality is there. In 2018, are proposed, the 2015, a vintage "lighthouse", the 2014, the 2013, the 2012, the 2011, the 2010, the 2009, and some 1997. Modifications are planned in the park to better welcome the visitors during events, including the equestrian show on Saturday 19 May 2018 and the EMA baroque concert on 15 June.

You will excite your taste buds with this very large Sauternes 2015, powerful on the nose as on the palate, with discreet notes of candied fruits and white flowers, intense, a very refined wine, seductive by its scale of aromas on the palate, very beautiful evolution, perfect, for example, on a cream pheasant or a Bleu de Bresse. The 2014 is true to itself, with delicacy and distinction, fine and tasty, dense and velvety, of a beautiful color, with a rich and well-present nose dominated by notes of cooked peach and toasted bread, which we find at the Palace. The 2013, of beautiful color with golden reflections, is very harmonious, mature but always very fine, with the aromas of white fruits, developing nuances of honey, gingerbread, pink and candied lemon, of great persistence . The 2012, very well controlled in this delicate vintage (where success is not everywhere), suave, dense and velvety, beautiful color, rich nose and well present, is dominated by notes of toast and candied fruit.
Formidable 2011, which received a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge, bold, velvety mouth, subtlety of aromas, golden hue, full of charm, combining power and finesse, with intense nose of pink and gingerbread, guard. The 2010, with its scents where candied citrus fruits and brioche intertwine, mouth full and tasty, is a delicate wine, all subtle, that I advise you as well on sweetbreads with morels and lobster with orange juice and saffron. All in sweet nuances, the 2009, of very beautiful rich and unctuous matter, of great concentration, with the delicate aromas of citrus (peach, grapefruit), is a wine of a beautiful elegance, of guard. The 2008, powerful taste buds, a very beautiful aromatic persistence, with notes of citrus and linden, is very structured in the final. Splendid 2007, a great smoothness, a great fat wine, intense mouth, with these shades of pink, brioche bread and overripe peach, great evolution, one of the most beautiful successes of the appellation.
Presented in a nice little slender and modern bottle, there is also Sauternes Zest, marked by Sauvignon, particularly seductive, vivacious, fine, a beautiful idea to seduce a young audience.

You can visit the park of this beautiful Italian house dating from 1845, with its magnificent 17th century Pineau dovecote. The castle organizes many events during the year that are worth a visit. Sporting gatherings also benefit from the exceptional setting of the vast park of Château Filhot: the Golden Raisin on the weekend of November 11th.
