At the head of the First Great Wines Classified. The creation of the current vineyard dates back to the years 1630 to 1650. The Château itself was created in 1709 by Romain de Filhot, a councillor in the parliament of Bordeaux, whose family already owned the noble house of Verdoulet in Sauternes. At the time, he had imposed the use of the Sauternes appellation in place of the old "vin de Langon" appellation for the liqueur wines of this region. After the revolution, the Lur-Saluces, heirs of the Filhot by Josephine de Filhot, managed the estate. In 1840, Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces (1810-1876) brought together the estates of Château Filhot and Pineau du Rey. In 1845, he rebuilt the Château in a neoclassical style following the plans of the architect Poitevin and surrounded it with a superb English park of the renowned landscape gardener Louis-Ferdinand Fischer. The Château was rated second vintage in the classification proposed in 1855 to Napoleon III by the brokers and the Chamber of Commerce of Bordeaux. Classified under its name in 1855, the Château was then distributed worldwide, until the end of the 19th century, under the name of Château Sauternes. The domain takes over the name of Château Filhot in 1901.
In 1935, the Countess Durieu de Lacarelle, born Lur-Saluces, bought the vineyard from her brother. His son, Louis Durieu de Lacarelle, reconstituted and developed the vineyard until the 1970s. One of the daughters of Countess Durieu de Lacarelle née Lur-Saluces married Count Pierre de Vaucelles, ambassador of France.
Their eldest son, Count Henri de Vaucelles, managed the estate in 1974.
His son Gabriel, who has been involved in management since 1996, is now in charge. The 62 ha of vines are planted 60% in Sémillon, 36% in Sauvignon and 4% in Muscadelle. The hillsides are oriented to the south or southwest and consist of gravel, clay and sand on a limestone plateau. Bordered by the forest massif of the Landes and crossed by a small local river, the Ciron, the estate benefits from ideal micro-climatic conditions to the development of the Botrytis Cinerea.
“In 2018, there was hail on Sauternes,” says Gabriel de Vaucelles, “we were less affected than many others, but we still made a small harvest. The acidity in the wines is lower, it is due to a warm and dry autumn. It will be a more accessible wine in the style of 1995.
We sell the 2016 and the 2017 will be bottled in July. The 2015 is very successful, it is in line with 2009, it is the one we taste on the salons and it has a lot of success. The 2016 is a vintage quite similar but, it is still young, it displays a good liquorice structure just like the 2015 which is a very good vintage.
We still host many sporting events including the Raisin d'or in November, and cultural, concerts EMA in June, they take place in the park of the Château Filhot which is a place of welcome during summer and autumn. You will excite your taste buds with this very large Sauternes 2016, perfumed, all in distinction, with aromas of grilled and pear, ample and fatty, a wine of an intense finish, to be expected on skewers of foie gras or vacherin, in particular. Beautiful 2015, powerful on the nose as in the mouth, discreet notes of candied fruit and white flowers, intense, a very refined wine, seductive by its breadth of aromas on the palate, very beautiful evolution, perfect, for example, on a cream pheasant or a Bresse Blue. The 2014, is true to itself, all in delicacy and distinction, fine and tasty, dense and velvety, beautiful color, with a rich nose and well present dominated by notes of cooked peach and toast, which one finds in the palate.
The 2013, beautiful color with golden reflections, is very harmonious, mature but always very fine, with aromas of white fruits, developing nuances of honey, gingerbread, rose and candied lemon, of great persistence. The 2012, very well mastered in this delicate vintage (where success is not everywhere), sweet, dense and velvety, beautiful color, rich and well present nose, dominated by notes of toasted bread and candied fruit. Formidable 2011, which received a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge, it is bold, velvety mouth, all in subtle aromas, golden hue, full of charm, combining power and finesse, the intense nose of rose and gingerbread, of guard. The 2010, with its aromas of citrus confit and brioche, full of mouth and tasty, is a delicate wine, all in subtlety, I recommend veal sweetbreads with morels and a lobster with orange juice and saffron.
Presented in a pretty small and modern bottle, there is also this Sauternes Zest 2016, well marked by the Sauvignon, particularly attractive, vivacious, fine, a beautiful idea to seduce a young audience.
You can visit the park of this beautiful Italian mansion dating back to 1845, with its magnificent 17th century Pineau pigeon house. The castle organizes many events throughout the year that are worth a visit. Sporting gatherings also enjoy the exceptional setting of the vast park of the Château Filhot: the Raisin d'or on the weekend of 11 November.
