At the head of the First Great Classified Wines. The creation of the current vineyard dates back to the years 1630 to 1650. The Château itself was created in 1709 by Romain de Filhot, adviser to the parliament of Bordeaux, whose family already owned the noble house of Verdoulet in Sauternes. At the time, he had imposed the use of the Sauternes appellation in place of the old appellation "Langon wine" for the sweet wines of this region. After the revolution, the Lur-Saluces, heirs to the Filhot family by Joséphine de Filhot, managed the estate. In 1840, Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces (1810-1876) brought together the domains of Château Filhot and Pineau du Rey. In 1845, he rebuilt the Château in a neoclassical style following the plans of the architect Poitevin and surrounded it with a superb English-style park of the renowned gardener and landscape designer Louis-Ferdinand Fischer. The Château was rated second cru in the classification proposed in 1855 to Napoleon III by the brokers and the chamber of commerce of Bordeaux. Classified under its name in 1855, the Château was then distributed worldwide, until the end of the 19th century, under the name of Château Sauternes. The domain resumed the name of Château Filhot in 1901. In 1935, the Countess Durieu de Lacarelle, née Lur-Saluces, bought the vineyard from her brother. Her son, Louis Durieu de Lacarelle reconstituted and developed the vineyard until the 1970s. One of the daughters of the Countess Durieu de Lacarelle born Lur-Saluces married Count Pierre de Vaucelles, Ambassador of France. Their eldest son, Count Henri de Vaucelles, managed the estate in 1974. His son Gabriel, who has been involved in management since 1996, is now in charge. The 62 ha of vines are planted 60% in Sémillon, 36% in Sauvignon and 4% in Muscadelle. The slopes are oriented to the south or southwest and are made up of gravel, clay and sand on a limestone plateau. Bordered by the Landes forest massif and crossed by a small local river, the Ciron, the estate benefits from micro-climatic conditions ideal for the development of Botrytis Cinerea.
“In 2019, the climatic conditions were not obvious, explains Gabriel de Vaucelles, we harvested a very small quantity only 12 hl / ha but grapes of excellent quality and the wine promises to be very successful.
For sale, we offer the 2017 which is still a bit young, the 2015 and 2016 are very good.
Take advantage of 2009 which is a benchmark vintage, it reminds me of 1990 and 1995, it is a superb wine with a beautiful structure, excellent balance. We also have 1997 for sale, it is our oldest vintage, it offers a wide aromatic palette with notes of exotic fruits, lots of complexity and elegance, a very beautiful vintage that we can taste now but also to keep, because it has a good aging potential (around 10 years).
Zest 2017 has a nice freshness, good balance, very pleasant lemon notes, light structure, a very easy-to-drink wine, very cool, ideal as an aperitif. ”
This is a wonderful Sauternes 2017, golden yellow in color, combining power and charm, with scents of narcissus and spices, a long complex finish where aromas of candied fruit develop, a great wine still very young, of great evolution . The 2016, fragrant, with distinction, with aromas of toast and pear, full and fatty, a wine with an intense finish, to be expected on skewers of foie gras or a vacherin, in particular. Beautiful 2015, powerful on the nose as in the mouth, with discreet notes of candied fruit and white flowers, intense, a very refined wine, seductive by its range of aromas on the palate, very nice evolution, perfect, for example, on a pheasant with cream or a Bleu de Bresse. The 2014, is true to itself, with delicacy and distinction, fine and tasty, dense and velvety, beautiful color, with a rich and very present nose dominated by notes of cooked peach and toast, which we found at the palace.
The 2012, very well mastered in this delicate vintage (where success is not everywhere), suave, dense and velvety, has a rich nose dominated by notes of toast and candied fruit. Exceptional 2011, which received a Gold medal at the International Wine Challenge, it is fat, velvety on the palate, with subtle aromas, golden hue, full of charm, with an intense nose of rose and brown bread. 'spices, to keep. As for this sumptuous 2009, it is a wine of very beautiful rich and unctuous matter, of great concentration, with citrus aromas (peach, grapefruit), of a beautiful elegance, of guard, really bewitching.
Presented in a pretty, sleek and modern little bottle, there is also this Sauternes Zest, well marked by Sauvignon, particularly attractive, lively, fine, a great idea to seduce a young audience.
You can visit the park of this beautiful Italian mansion dating from 1845, with its magnificent 17th century Pineau dovecote. Many events during the year that are worth a visit.
